Hyyge – a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being
“There is nothing like staying at home for real comfort.” -Jane Austen. Nothing gives off that cozy home feeling like lighting a candle. It makes a statement – I’m not going anywhere. It brings back memories -Ah! It smells like the lilacs in the backyard just as it did when I was a child. It creates hygge.
One of my biggest passions is to use my voice on social media to help small/local businesses. I love learning about the person/people behind the company. Since I have enjoyed interviewing authors, I thought why not find out more about some of the brands I love. Callie, the owner of From the Page, graciously agreed to do an interview to give an insider look at running a candle company.
When I first discovered From the Page on Instagram, I fell in love with the clever names and beautiful colors of all the candles. It was obsession at first sniff. These candles are legit. Even my family (who are VERY fussy about the candles I burn), gave these two thumbs up.
What made you want to start your own business?
I really love handmade items and small businesses, and wanted to give it a try! I definitely didn’t set out with the intention of doing it full time, and funnily enough I think that helped take the pressure off! It has really grown steadily and gone through so many different stages, and it’s now my full time business.
How did you come up with the name From the Page?
I wanted people to know they were inspired by books so I thought – inspirations From the Page!
Why candles? And more specifically -bookish candles?
The first time I made candles was just for fun and to see if I could. Almost instantly (pretty much the same day) I had a really good feeling and knew I wanted to sell them! I also knew they needed a unique twist to hook people, so I started brainstorming. I remembered seeing an “arcade” candle and thought it was interesting to evoke a setting or memory, and books came right to my mind. I love reading so the inspiration is pretty much endless!
How do you decide what scents to make?
I usually do one of two things! First, I make scents from specific books that are described in the text or can match a setting/object well. Second, I might find a fragrance that I love. In that case, I will try and think of something it evokes or a more general candle (like Reading Nook) that it would match.
I also love people’s suggestions and am of course quite biased to doing scents for all the books I love!
How do you create each scent profile?
When I started I definitely didn’t mix too much and used more generic scents. Now, I love testing all the time and seeing what scents work together! I know you can get a vanilla candle anywhere, so I aim for most of my scents to be unique!
Do you have an official “smell tester”?
I don’t think anyone in my family has been short on candles in years -I am pretty much always giving them out. I definitely go to my mom the most – she’s filled the house with candles my whole life so I trust her nose.
Name your top three favorite scents you have ever created.
Oh, a hard one! I would have to say Reading Nook (which is amber, coriander and dark musk), 221B Baker Street (black currant tea and leather) and Bibliosmia (paper, amber, cedar, musk and vanilla). I have a *big* thing for amber and musk, if you can tell!
Any secret projects in the works?
I actually have a new collection coming out soon that will be more minimal/home inspired! I’m excited to share it with everyone soon!
