The Bareknuckle Groom

THE BAREKNUCKLE GROOM BY HOLLY BUSH

Meet the Thompsons of Locust Street, an unconventional family taking Philadelphia high society by storm…

1869 Bareknuckle champion, James Thompson, is confident his future continues with beautiful women and victories in the boxing ring. Men admire his skills, power, and quick fists, and are more than willing to bet their hard-earned coins on his name. Women admire his handsome face, his undaunted confidence, and his powerful body. Nothing will change his successfully plotted course, until…

Lucinda Vermeal arrives on the Philadelphia social scene when her father moves them to the city in the hopes that his only daughter will find a suitable partner. After all, her husband will be intimately involved with Vermeal Industries whose business interests and political connections touch France, England and all of the United States. Lucinda’s pale statuesque beauty attracts the finest of Philadelphia’s young men, but her cool and reserved attitude keep them at arm’s length. Until she meets a man willing to challenge her at every turn. Will James Thompson expose Lucinda’s passionate nature like no other man ever could?

This was a great quick read. The perfect book to grab when you are looking for a summer afternoon beach read. I enjoyed the fact that it was set in a little bit more modern and American setting than my usual Regency-era romances. It was a nice change of pace. I really enjoyed the Thompson family! They are a fun and lively bunch that made me feel like it would be fun to be a part of their family circle.

Overall, it was a good story with a fast-paced plot. There were a few characters tended to shift a bit too quickly as the ending was wrapping up but it didn’t steal too much from the enjoyment of the story. If you enjoy an American post-Civil War setting with a little bit of steam. Grab The Bareknuckle Groom for a rousing weekend read.

Melissa has been in love with books since she was a child. As a young girl, in her Holly Hobby decorated room, she would sit and tape scraps of paper to her books so that she could organize them by the Dewey Decimal System. She is a huge advocate for helping children learn to love reading. Along with hosting an online Regency based book club and a book club at her home, she started a book club for kids at her son’s school. These days, Melissa can be found at the library writing a book review or tucked in some quiet corner having a love affair with a newly discovered romance novel.
